The Land Where Turbie Games

No Alternatives to YouTube?

Don't get me wrong when it comes to the title of this post. We do have alternatives, but they either aren't exactly as good as YouTube or they are paid options.

If you're like me and don't really want to spend money that you don't have on subscription on certain month, you're more likely to look for free alternatives.

I have an Odysee account that I made years ago. I was looking around casually back then and never really go beyond than just watching videos here and there. And recently, it got me thinking... what if I tried uploading there as well and if possible, I would like to abandon YouTube one day to escape the Google ecosystem.

I tried it (uploading to Odysee). And guess what?

They have total bitrate limits1. If you ever made gaming YouTube content before, you'd know that anything below 10,000kps bitrate for a 1080p Gameplay video is low quality-ish. And is video hosting website like YouTube really that expensive that only Google can afford to lose money?

Of course I can always pay for a subscription over at Vimeo2 but if I can avoid it, I would. I really don't want to end up spending $5 every month here, $50 every month there, and $10 every month on this subscription. It .... adds up over time and sometimes you just don't have enough for the month.

Which also got me thinking, is YouTube too big to fail now? At least for a free platform, that is.

  1. It was maximum of 5,000kbps bitrate.

  2. Although Vimeo also have limitation, both free and paid tier.
