Re: Bear Blogging - unanswered questions + Thank You
I saw this post by Lizzie from Love is Verbing the other day.
Lizzie asked:
How do most bear bloggers discover bear?
I cannot answer for Herman (and/or to some extend, Robert Birming but I can definitely answer for myself.
Back in late May 2026, I was initially shopping around for alternative to Linktree (due to them adding GenAI clause, but this is a topic for another day). And I couldn't find what I want from the alternatives after a few days of search. Carrd only had paid version, Straw.Page is okay but it doesn't really appeal to me. And a couple of them seems suspicious. A couple of them has AI in them. Most have limitations for free versions (eg. number of visits). And yes, I will always try to find free tier, if possible. Can't find any to suit my needs and I'm not sure if paying for basically a bio link is worth the money... yet.
So I thought..... what if I go back to my root of blogging but with a page that I can create with all my socials?
I started to narrow down to blog hosting that I know of (ranging from 2007 to 2018-ish). Blogger, Google Sites, Wordpress, Wix, Weebly. You name it.... Then I tried narrow it down even further to what I REALLY want when it comes to blogs... or even just a place where I can showcase all my socials in 1 area. Blogger and Google Sites are definitely out of the question. Mainly because both are Google products1. And I'm not super keen on "Modern" UI look.
Cue AlternativeTo website. Neocities was one of the alternatives, then there was Medium2 right below of Neocities.... Then comes Bearblog.
Privacy-first, no-nonsense, super-fast blogging. No trackers, no JavaScript, no stylesheets. Just your words.
It is what was shown on that AlternativeTo page for Blogger.
So I thought, why not check it out. Signed up for an account, checking out what the Bear can do. Made my first Post and continue to look around the site. Checked the discovery page and so on.
Little do I know that 6 weeks later, I've been blogging more often that I initially thought I would do.
Thank you Herman, for creating Bearblog.
Thank You #2
On a side note, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Pretend Typewriter for writing up their response to one of my post. Keep it up!
Side Note
Guess it's #JulyReply2026? Haha.
