Twitch's GenAI And Opt-Out
Well well well... Twitch decided to implement GenAI training stuff in settings today, or at least I was aware of.
The only decency they have is they allowing it's users to opt out.
I also saw this news article earlier. This article came from the Stream they did yesterday. Their Chief Product Officer said:
“Why is it not opt in? That’s what everybody is in here, spamming in chat, I get it, ‘let me opt in versus making me opt out’,” Minton said during the stream. “Well, there’s an honest answer, and I think most of you probably can appreciate this – if it was opt in, nobody would opt in.
Why nobody would opt in? Because nobody wants their sh*t be trained by any AI, but at least with opt-in, they won't be receiving the backlash they are receiving right now. The CPO wasn't very convincing on the stream either.
If Twitch isn't a company and just singular person, it's still bad to use GenAI (or AI in general) but it won't be as bad because as long as you keep it offline/local-only. And since Twitch is a for-profit company, no matter what they say, nobody would believe them. I definitely don't.
That's one way to lose your userbase's trust, overnight.
Hopefully they reverse the decision and use other ways that doesn't involves Twitch Streamers (and chatters) to "train" their AI. I dislike getting forced into training their GenAI, even with the opt-out. They aren't very transparent when it comes to what still counts for "AI training" for people like me who opted out.
